PARIS: Party time! And out of nowhere has come a challenge to the little black dress that might even beat out the perennial classic.
Let's call the new look: The Shining. For anything that shimmers, glistens or reflects like a well-polished automobile is the hit of the celebration season.
The dress could be black, of course - if it is made in Duchess satin or that rustling taffeta that radiates shine. But it is more likely to be in a metallic fabric: a gleaming gold without a trace of tarnish; a brilliant silver, or maybe bronze and pewter.
The treasure trove of metal started on the red carpet last summer, when the British actress Sienna Miller wore a gold-sequined mini- dress from Burberry to the Metropolitan Museum gala celebrating "Anglomania."
With her hair an elfin straggle, a brief hemline and thick hose, Miller caught the 1960s vibe inspired by Edie Sedgwick, a muse for Andy Warhol and the subject of Miller's new movie "Factory Girl."

The gilt mini with a high-rise waist and flat empire bow has been copied across the fashion world and has become cool partywear.
